Since 1st January 2011 we can finally take part in Best in Shows and compete for higher titles!
Each cattery, that wants to breed cats with a certificate of origin (pedigree), must be registered with some of the breeding organizations. This used to be a dilemma for Don Sphynx breeders until May 2010 when don sphynx was fully recognised.
Till that time Don Sphynx was in a different position with various organizations, which was a result of the relatively short history of this cat breed. While e.g. WCF (World Cat Federation) and many others had recognized Don Sphynx in full a few years before, FIFe (Fédération Internationale Féline) – the most common cat fancier society in the Czech Republic - still classified Don Sphynx as so-called pre-recognized breed.
There had been several attempts at the recognition - Slovakia 2008, Finland 2009, but due to various reasons they had not been succesfull. According to my information, the most serious reason for this was a joined proposal for two different breeds - Don Sphynx and Peterbald (a hairless breed, which was bred as a result of crossing Don Sphynx and Siamese cat).
In the end, the individual don sphynx proposal in Portugal was a great success and so since January 2011 this special breed can take part in all the competitions including Best In Shows and can even get all the titles existing with FIFe.
We are very glad about this fact and hope that don sphynx will make a real partner to other cat breeds and will gain many new fans, because our cats are not only intelligent and ellegant but, believe it or not, they are very warm and pleasant to touch as well ;o)
